A fine example of Ming Dynasty cursive calligraphy by Wen Zhengming, presented on a traditional fan-shaped format.
This work presents a fine example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy, executed by Wen Zhengming, a scholar-official and artist from Suzhou. The piece is formatted as a fan, a popular medium for literati expression during this period. The characters are written in a fluid, cursive script, demonstrating the artist's command of brush control and rhythm. Each stroke carries a distinct weight, balancing the density of the ink against the textured, gold-flecked paper surface.
Wen Zhengming was a central figure in the Wu School of painting and calligraphy. His approach to the brush was informed by a deep study of classical models, yet he maintained a personal style characterised by clarity and grace. In this fan painting, the arrangement of the characters follows the natural curvature of the fan ribs, creating a harmonious relationship between the text and the physical object. The composition is balanced, with the vertical columns of characters providing a sense of order despite the cursive nature of the script.
The use of gold-flecked paper adds a subtle luminosity to the work, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the Ming elite. Such fans were often exchanged as gifts among scholars, serving as vehicles for poetry or philosophical reflection. The red seal at the lower left provides a visual anchor, contrasting with the black ink and the warm tones of the paper. This piece offers an insight into the cultural practices of the period, where the act of writing was considered a primary form of artistic expression. The preservation of the fan format allows the viewer to appreciate the integration of functional design and high art, a hallmark of the literati tradition in China.
