A 1914 calendar for the Holland Iron Railway Company, featuring a maritime scene by Hobbe Smith framed by Art Nouveau graphic design by André Vlaanderen.
This 1914 calendar for the Hollandse IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (Holland Iron Railway Company) serves as a fine example of early twentieth-century Dutch graphic design. The central panel features a reproduction of a frieze by the painter Hobbe Smith, depicting a maritime view of Amsterdam. The surrounding frame, designed by the Dutch artist André Vlaanderen, employs the stylistic vocabulary of Art Nouveau, characterised by its balanced, geometric borders and allegorical figures.
The composition is divided into distinct sections. At the top, a winged figure sits beneath an arch, flanked by decorative motifs that incorporate the initials of the railway company. The lower portion provides the calendar grid for the month of October, alongside promotional text for international rail routes connecting Amsterdam to Hamburg and Berlin. The inclusion of specific travel information, such as the availability of sleeping cars and restaurant carriages, reflects the commercial purpose of the piece, which was intended to promote the efficiency and reach of the Dutch rail network.
Vlaanderen, a known illustrator and designer of the period, utilised a clean, structured layout that contrasts with the atmospheric, painterly quality of Smith's central maritime scene. The typography is clear and functional, typical of the period's transition toward modern advertising aesthetics. The print was produced by the renowned firm Joh. Enschedé & Zonen, a company with a long history in high-quality printing and typography in the Netherlands. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of fine art and corporate promotion during the pre-war era, capturing both the artistic sensibilities of the time and the rapid expansion of European rail travel.
