Beskrivning
Caledonian Canal draws the eye through a series of lock gates, with Highland slopes beyond giving the engineered waterway a broad, quiet setting in summer.
Dark gates divide the water into a succession of chambers that recede towards the hills. Stone walls rise on either side of the foreground pool, while grassy banks and scattered trees soften the straight canal edges. The sky opens above the blue-green ridges.
Caledonian Canal joins careful engineering to the scale of the surrounding Highlands. From this viewpoint, the gates repeat into the distance and make the water route easy to follow. Those who have travelled through the locks may remember the measured passage from one chamber to the next, with hills visible beyond the banks.
