This hanging scroll by Maruyama Ōshin captures a moment of quiet observation within the natural world. The composition follows the principles of the Maruyama-Shijō school, which prioritised direct observation of nature combined with a refined, painterly technique. The calabash vine ascends the vertical space of the silk, its leaves rendered in soft, muted tones that suggest a gentle weight and texture. The delicate tendrils curl upwards, providing a sense of movement that contrasts with the stillness of the broad, heart-shaped leaves.
A single, small beetle rests upon the stem, acting as a point of focus amidst the foliage. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the subtle variations in green and the pale, textured white of the flower to emerge from the warm, neutral background of the aged silk. The brushwork is precise yet fluid, characteristic of the artist's training in the lineage established by his grandfather, Maruyama Ōkyo. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the structural elegance of the plant and the balance of negative space.
