Charles Willson Peale, a polymath and painter, created this view of his estate, Belfield, during his later years. After retiring from his active career as a portraitist in Philadelphia, Peale moved to this property near Germantown, Pennsylvania. He dedicated his time to scientific observation, agricultural experimentation, and the cultivation of his grounds. This painting captures the orderly nature of his vegetable garden, focusing on the rows of cabbages that dominate the foreground.
The composition reflects the Enlightenment interest in the intersection of nature and human industry. Peale employs a clear, observational approach, documenting the specific flora and the structured layout of the garden.
