A sixteenth-century natural history illustration by Adriaen Coenen, documenting a northern bottlenose whale with detailed observations and handwritten notes.
This illustration originates from the Visboek (Fish Book), a manuscript compiled by the Dutch fisherman and observer Adriaen Coenen between 1577 and 1581. The work documents various marine creatures encountered along the coast of the Netherlands. This specific plate depicts a northern bottlenose whale, identified by the artist as a 'Butskop'.
Coenen provides a detailed visual record, combining scientific observation with the artistic conventions of the sixteenth century. The whale is rendered in profile, set against a stylised, repetitive pattern representing the sea. The artist employs a muted palette of greys and browns, with a delicate pink plume emerging from the blowhole to indicate the animal breathing. The composition is framed by a thick, dark border, which separates the creature from the extensive handwritten Dutch text below. This text serves as a primary source, detailing the date of the animal's discovery near Zierikzee in August 1583, along with precise measurements of its body parts, including the length, width, and the appearance of its fins and mouth.
The drawing reflects the curiosity of the period regarding natural phenomena. Coenen was not a trained scientist, yet his documentation provides valuable data for modern researchers studying historical marine biology. The flat, decorative treatment of the water contrasts with the attempt at anatomical accuracy in the whale's form. This juxtaposition is characteristic of early modern natural history, where the desire to catalogue the natural world met the limitations of contemporary observational techniques. The inclusion of the text directly on the page integrates the visual record with the narrative of the encounter, creating a document that functions as both a scientific report and a historical record of maritime life in the sixteenth-century Netherlands.
