A detailed woodcut portrait of a bearded man, attributed to Christoffel Jegher after a design by Peter Paul Rubens.
This woodcut by Christoffel Jegher presents a portrait of a bearded man, traditionally identified as Doge Giovanni Cornaro. Jegher was a skilled woodcutter who collaborated with Peter Paul Rubens, and this work reflects the technical precision required to translate painterly qualities into the medium of the woodblock. The inscription in the upper corners confirms the collaborative nature of the production, with Rubens credited for the design and Jegher for the cutting.
The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, his gaze directed slightly away from the viewer. The artist employs a system of parallel lines and cross-hatching to model the facial features, beard, and the texture of the fur-lined garment. These marks create a sense of volume and depth, typical of the period's interest in chiaroscuro effects. The use of a mid-tone paper background allows the white highlights to stand out, providing a sculptural quality to the figure.
Jegher's technique demonstrates a mastery of the woodcut medium, which was often overshadowed by engraving during the seventeenth century. By varying the thickness and direction of the lines, he achieves a range of tonal values that define the contours of the face and the weight of the clothing. The composition is focused entirely on the subject, stripping away extraneous detail to concentrate on the character and presence of the sitter. This print serves as an example of the professional relationship between designers and printmakers in the Flemish Baroque tradition, where the division of labour allowed for the dissemination of high-quality imagery across Europe. The work remains a study in the application of graphic techniques to achieve a sense of physical presence and psychological weight.
