A direct, expressive watercolour study of a ruined building in Holstein, captured by Lovis Corinth in 1886 with a focus on form and light.
This watercolour study by Lovis Corinth captures the skeletal remains of a structure in Holstein, executed in 1886. During this early period of his career, Corinth demonstrated a keen interest in the direct observation of his surroundings, moving away from the rigid academic training he received in Munich and Paris. The work displays a focus on the physical reality of the site, where the charred timber and exposed masonry are rendered with a fluid, confident hand.
The composition is anchored by the stark contrast between the white, crumbling walls of the ruin and the dark, dense foliage that looms in the background. Corinth uses a muted palette of earth tones, ochres, and greys to convey the sense of desolation inherent in the subject. The application of paint is loose and gestural, allowing the texture of the paper to remain visible in several areas. This technique provides a sense of immediacy, suggesting that the work was completed on-site as a direct response to the scene.
Corinth's approach here avoids sentimentality. Instead, he treats the architectural decay as a study in form, light, and shadow. The structural elements of the building are reduced to their essential shapes, while the surrounding environment is suggested through quick, rhythmic brushstrokes. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's developing style, which would later transition into the more expressive, gestural manner for which he is known. The inscription at the bottom, written by the artist, provides a clear record of the location and date, confirming its status as a personal observation from his travels in Northern Germany. It is a direct, unadorned record of a specific moment in time, reflecting the artist's early commitment to capturing the world as he encountered it.
