Buried Alive (Vergrabene) is a plate from the 1924 portfolio Der Krieg (The War) by Otto Dix. This series of fifty etchings documents the artist's experiences as a machine gunner during the First World War. Dix utilised the medium of etching to capture the visceral reality of trench warfare, moving away from the romanticised depictions of combat common in earlier art.

The composition presents a desolate, churned earth where human forms are partially submerged. The lines are aggressive and jagged, reflecting the chaotic destruction of the battlefield. The use of aquatint creates a dark, oppressive atmosphere, emphasising the mud and debris that define the scene. By focusing on the anonymity of the victims, Dix conveys the dehumanising nature of industrialised conflict. The figures are barely distinguishable from the surrounding terrain, suggesting a grim unity between the soldiers and the earth that claims them.

Dix was a member of the New Objectivity movement, which sought to depict the harsh realities of post-war German society with unflinching precision. This work avoids sentimentality, choosing instead to present the viewer with the raw, unvarnished truth of the front lines. The print serves as a historical document of the psychological and physical trauma inflicted upon a generation. It remains a stark reminder of the cost of war, stripped of any heroic narrative.
