A detailed woodblock print from the Meiji-era Buddhist catalogue, featuring four seated figures with specific iconographic attributes.
This woodblock print originates from the Meiji-era expansion of the 'Shoshū butsuzō zui', a comprehensive catalogue of Buddhist iconography. Kino Shūshin compiled these volumes to provide a systematic reference for the various manifestations of deities and figures within Japanese Buddhism. The page displays four distinct seated figures, each positioned upon a lotus pedestal, representing different levels of the nine grades of rebirth in the Pure Land.
The visual execution relies on precise, clean lines characteristic of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. Each figure is rendered with a consistent stylistic approach, focusing on the clarity of mudras (hand gestures) and the draping of robes. The surrounding text provides the necessary doctrinal context for each figure, identifying their specific attributes and the spiritual conditions they represent. This work functions as a visual lexicon, designed for practitioners and scholars to identify and understand the complex hierarchy of Buddhist figures.
The composition is structured into a grid, a common layout for instructional manuals of this period. By isolating each figure within its own quadrant, the print allows for easy comparison of the subtle variations in posture and gesture. The lack of background detail ensures that the viewer focuses entirely on the iconographic elements. This print is a clear example of the pedagogical function of religious art in 19th-century Japan, where the dissemination of accurate imagery was essential for maintaining religious orthodoxy. The monochrome palette and the stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface reflect the functional nature of the publication, prioritising legibility and accuracy over decorative flourish. It remains a valuable resource for those interested in the history of Japanese religious art and the technical traditions of woodblock printing during the Meiji period.
