A detailed 1772 engraving by Domenico Cunego depicting the dramatic Roman oath of Brutus after the death of Lucretia.
This fine art print reproduces a significant engraving by Domenico Cunego, executed in 1772 after a painting by Gavin Hamilton. The composition depicts the dramatic moment following the death of Lucretia, a foundational narrative in Roman history. Lucretia lies slumped in the foreground, her form rendered with classical grace, while Lucius Junius Brutus stands at the centre, arm raised, holding the dagger used to extract the fatal wound. He is surrounded by figures who witness his oath to avenge her honour and expel the Tarquin monarchy from Rome.
Cunego, a skilled Italian engraver, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of light and shadow. The chiaroscuro effect creates a sense of theatrical tension, typical of the Neoclassical period. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, echoing the influence of antique sculpture and the rigorous academic standards of the eighteenth century. The drapery of the togas and the anatomical accuracy of the figures reflect the period's preoccupation with the moral and aesthetic values of antiquity.
Below the image, the print includes the original Latin text from Livy, alongside an English translation, which provides the historical context for the scene. This inclusion of text is characteristic of eighteenth-century reproductive prints, which functioned as both artistic objects and educational tools for the educated public. The work captures the gravity of the Roman Republic's inception, focusing on the themes of duty, sacrifice, and political upheaval. The print remains a clear example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers during the Enlightenment, where the dissemination of history paintings through high-quality prints allowed for the wider circulation of classical narratives and artistic ideals across Europe.
