A fine art print of Willard Metcalf's 1920 oil painting, capturing the transition from winter to spring in the New England countryside.
Willard Metcalf, a central figure in the Ten American Painters group, produced Brook in March during a period when his focus shifted toward the seasonal transitions of the New England countryside. This work captures the specific light and atmosphere of early spring, a time when the earth begins to thaw but retains the muted, ochre tones of winter. The composition centres on the movement of water, which cuts through the dormant hillside, reflecting the pale blue sky above.
Metcalf employs a technique characterised by broken brushwork and a light-filled palette. He avoids heavy outlines, preferring to define the forms of the trees and the rocky bank through the application of colour. The bare branches of the trees are rendered with quick, rhythmic strokes, suggesting the crisp air of the season. The water itself is painted with deeper blues and purples, providing a contrast to the warm, golden-brown grasses that dominate the foreground and the slope.
This painting demonstrates the artist's ability to observe the subtle shifts in nature. By choosing a subject that lacks the lush greenery of summer, Metcalf draws attention to the structural elements of the terrain and the clarity of the light. The stone wall, partially visible along the hillside, adds a human element to the scene, grounding the natural surroundings in a specific, lived-in geography. The work is a study in the interplay between the cold, receding winter and the promise of the coming spring, captured with a directness that avoids sentimentality. It remains a representative example of his later career, where his handling of paint became increasingly confident and his interest in the atmospheric conditions of the American Northeast reached its maturity.
