A detailed etching by Albert Meyeringh featuring a stone bridge and tower, rendered with precise cross-hatching and a focus on rural atmosphere.
This etching by Albert Meyeringh captures a quiet, rural scene defined by the architectural remnants of a stone bridge and a nearby tower. Meyeringh, a Dutch painter and etcher who spent significant time in Italy, often incorporated Mediterranean motifs into his work. The composition reflects this influence, presenting a structure that feels removed from the typical flat topography of the Netherlands.
The print demonstrates the artist's technical control over the etching needle. The foreground features a small group of figures with livestock, providing a sense of scale against the imposing masonry of the bridge and the ruined tower. Meyeringh uses varying densities of cross-hatching to define the textures of the stone, the foliage, and the water flowing beneath the arch. The sky is rendered with rhythmic, parallel lines that suggest a breezy, open atmosphere, contrasting with the solid, grounded nature of the buildings.
As a practitioner of the Dutch Golden Age, Meyeringh was part of a tradition that valued both observation and the construction of idealised scenes. This work does not aim for strict topographical accuracy, but rather creates a cohesive, atmospheric environment. The play of light and shadow across the bridge and the rocky bank indicates a focus on volume and depth. The print remains a clear example of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the artist balanced the rigour of architectural drawing with the fluid possibilities of the etching medium. It offers a glimpse into the period's fascination with classical ruins and the pastoral life that often surrounded them.
