Edouard Vuillard, a member of the Nabis group, is often associated with intimate domestic interiors. This work, however, shifts the focus to an exterior setting in Brittany. The composition captures a stone dwelling surrounded by a garden, rendered with the characteristic brushwork that defines his approach to surface and texture. Rather than pursuing traditional perspective, Vuillard flattens the space, allowing the colour and pattern of the stone walls and the surrounding foliage to occupy the same visual plane.
The palette relies on earthy ochres, muted greens, and cool blues, which reflect the specific light of the Breton region. His application of paint is dense and tactile, creating a surface that feels almost woven. The house itself, with its steep roof and small windows, sits firmly within the frame, while the foreground garden acts as a textured carpet of colour. This approach to painting prioritises the decorative quality of the scene over a literal transcription of the architecture.
Vuillard frequently visited Brittany during the late 1890s and early 1900s. These trips provided him with a departure from the Parisian interiors that dominated his earlier career. In this piece, the artist observes the rural structure with a sense of quiet detachment. The figures, if present, are integrated into the architecture, becoming part of the overall pattern rather than the narrative focus. Artist Biography
Edouard Vuillard
He joined the Nabis in the early 1890s, a group of young painters who took their name from the Hebrew word for prophets. The others (Bonnard, Denis, Serusier) were drawn to mysticism and esoteric philosophy. Vuillard was drawn to the interior. His mother's workroom, with its bolts of fabric, wallpaper patterns, and women in patterned dresses, became his subject. The paintings flatten space: the figure merges with the wallpaper, the dress dissolves into the upholstery, the room becomes a single surface of competing patterns. Critics called the approach Intimism.
He painted almost exclusively domestic scenes: rooms, tables, women sewing, women reading. The scale is modest. The colours are muted. There is no drama, no allegory, no mythology. The work assumes that a woman sitting in a chair in a room with good light is enough to make a painting, which it is.
He never married. He lived with his mother until she died and then lived alone. In the late twentieth century, historians began to reassess his decorative work (screens, murals, theatre sets for Lugne-Poe's Theatre de l'Oeuvre) and recognised that the small domestic paintings were not minor work but a deliberate programme: the interior as a subject equal to landscape or history.
