A detailed botanical study of a Brazilian orchid by Victorian explorer and artist Marianne North, capturing the plant in its natural habitat.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who dedicated her life to documenting the flora of the world. Between 1871 and 1885, she undertook extensive journeys across six continents, producing over 800 oil paintings. Her approach was distinct from the typical botanical illustrators of her era, as she preferred to paint plants in their natural habitats rather than as isolated specimens against a white background.
This study of a Brazilian orchid captures the plant clinging to the rough, textured bark of a tree. The composition focuses on the contrast between the delicate, fiery red petals of the orchid and the weathered, mossy surface of the host tree. North used oil on board, a medium that allowed her to work quickly in challenging field conditions while maintaining a high level of detail. Her brushwork is precise, capturing the specific structure of the orchid's labellum and the way the roots grip the bark.
North donated her entire collection to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where a purpose-built gallery was constructed to house her work. Her paintings remain a valuable record of plant species as they appeared in the late nineteenth century. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil paint, from the smooth, waxy surface of the orchid blooms to the coarse, organic matter of the tree trunk. It offers a view into the scientific curiosity and artistic rigour that defined North's career. The work is an example of her ability to combine aesthetic appeal with accurate observation, providing a window into the biodiversity of the Brazilian rainforest during the Victorian period.

Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
