A traditional hanging scroll by Kawanabe Kyōsai featuring symbols of the Boy's Day festival, including a carp streamer and the demon-queller Shōki.
This hanging scroll by Kawanabe Kyōsai depicts traditional imagery associated with the Tango no Sekku festival, commonly known as Boy's Day. The composition features a carp streamer, a symbol of strength and perseverance, alongside a banner depicting Shōki, the demon queller. Kyōsai, a master of both traditional and satirical styles, demonstrates his technical precision through the varied application of ink and pigment on silk.
The central figure of the rooster perched atop a decorated drum provides a vertical anchor for the scene. Below, the red-toned depiction of Shōki captures the deity in a dynamic pose, subduing a small demon. The inclusion of the carp, rendered in muted tones, contrasts with the bold red of the Shōki banner. The bamboo poles and circular wave patterns add structural elements that guide the viewer's eye across the vertical format of the scroll.
Kyōsai was known for his ability to blend classical Japanese themes with a personal, often idiosyncratic, artistic vision. This work reflects the cultural practices of the Meiji period, where traditional festivals remained a subject of interest for artists. The use of negative space on the silk background allows the specific motifs to emerge clearly, maintaining a balance between the decorative elements and the narrative content. The artist's signature and seal are visible, confirming his authorship of this piece. This print captures the specific aesthetic of Kyōsai's later career, where he moved between formal commissions and more expressive, individualistic works. The attention to detail in the textile patterns of the banners and the anatomical rendering of the rooster demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship expected of a painter of his standing during this era.
