Jean-Michel Basquiat produced Boxer Rebellion in 1982, a period during which he solidified his unique visual language. Basquiat combines anatomical sketches of boxers with fragmented text, mathematical notations, and references to global history. The central figures, rendered with raw, skeletal lines, evoke the physicality of the ring while simultaneously referencing the historical Boxer Rebellion in China.
Basquiat employs a non-linear approach to composition. He scatters words such as 'Peking Noodle', 'Sugar Ray Robinson', and 'Technical Knockout' across the surface, creating a rhythmic, almost musical experience for the viewer.
