A delicate Nihonga study of a mantis shrimp and a pufferfish, rendered in ink and subtle colour on silk.
This work by Seki Shūkō demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the Nihonga tradition during the Meiji period. The composition focuses on a mantis shrimp, rendered with careful attention to its segmented anatomy and delicate appendages. A pufferfish drifts in the upper portion of the frame, providing a sense of scale and movement within the aquatic environment. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on subtle washes of ink to suggest the depth and transparency of the water.
The silk support contributes to the soft, diffused quality of the image. The artist uses fine, controlled brushwork to define the textures of the marine creatures, contrasting the rigid shell of the crustacean with the smooth, rounded form of the fish. Sparse, wispy strokes at the bottom of the composition represent sea grass or debris on the ocean floor, anchoring the subjects without cluttering the negative space.
Seki Shūkō was active during a period when Japanese artists were synthesising traditional techniques with modern observational practices. This piece reflects an interest in natural history, common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The work avoids excessive ornamentation, favouring a quiet, observational approach that prioritises the physical reality of the subjects. The signature and red seals in the lower right corner provide formal attribution, consistent with the conventions of the era. This print offers a view into the intersection of scientific curiosity and artistic refinement, capturing a fleeting moment beneath the surface of the sea.
