A 1915 etching by Sidney L. Smith featuring a classical figure and Greek script, designed as a personal bookplate for Charles Eliot Goodspeed.
This etching by Sidney L. Smith, dated 1915, functions as a personal bookplate for the American bibliophile Charles Eliot Goodspeed. The composition draws heavily upon classical architectural motifs, framing a central figure of a seated woman in a manner reminiscent of antique funerary stelae or votive reliefs. The figure, draped in traditional robes, sits upon a block, conveying a sense of quiet contemplation appropriate for a library setting.
The frame surrounding the central image incorporates geometric patterns and scrollwork, typical of the refined, academic approach to engraving favoured by Smith. Below the central figure, the artist has included a Greek inscription. This text is taken from the Epistle to the Philippians (4:8), which encourages the reader to focus on things that are true, honourable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable. The inclusion of this passage reflects the intellectual and moral values often associated with private book collections during the early twentieth century.
Sidney L. Smith was a highly regarded engraver, known for his technical precision and his ability to adapt historical styles to the requirements of modern book ownership. His work often prioritised clarity of line and balanced proportions. This particular print demonstrates his skill in managing tonal variations through cross-hatching, which gives the draped fabric and the architectural frame a tactile quality. The print is presented on a neutral background, maintaining the aesthetic of a collector's proof. As a piece of ephemera, it offers a glimpse into the personal identity of its owner, Charles Eliot Goodspeed, who was a prominent bookseller and publisher in Boston. The work remains a fine example of the American ex libris tradition, where the marriage of classical iconography and personal identity was a common pursuit for those building private libraries.
