A 1914 watercolour and ink study by Alfred Ost depicting a farm wagon pulled by two draught horses in the Flemish countryside.
This work by the Belgian artist Alfred Ost captures a scene of rural labour with characteristic economy of line and tone. Dated 1914, the composition depicts a heavy farm wagon pulled by two draught horses, one grey and one chestnut, accompanied by a driver wrapped in winter attire. A dog sits atop the wagon, adding a touch of domesticity to the otherwise utilitarian subject.
Ost, known for his prolific output of drawings and watercolours, often focused on the daily life of the Flemish countryside. His approach here relies on a combination of fluid ink outlines and muted watercolour washes. The artist avoids excessive detail, preferring to suggest form through gestural marks and subtle colour shifts. The grey horse is rendered with minimal pigment, allowing the paper to provide the primary tone, while the chestnut horse receives more saturated colour to create a visual anchor in the centre of the frame.
The composition is direct and unadorned. The figures move towards the viewer, their heavy gait suggested by the posture of the horses and the hunched figure of the driver. The background remains largely suggested, keeping the focus on the interaction between the animals and their handler. This piece reflects the artist's ability to document the rhythms of agricultural life during the early twentieth century. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner, a common practice for Ost, who frequently annotated his sketches with precise temporal markers. By capturing this fleeting moment of transit, Ost provides a glimpse into a period of European history where animal power remained essential to the functioning of rural communities. The print maintains the texture and tonal range of the original paper, preserving the immediacy of the artist's hand.
