A six-panel folding screen by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, featuring boats navigating stylised waves against a luminous gold leaf background.
This six-panel folding screen, attributed to Tawaraya Sōtatsu, represents the aesthetic principles of the early Edo period. Sōtatsu was a founder of the Rinpa school, a movement known for its decorative use of gold leaf and bold, stylised natural forms. The composition features two wooden boats adrift upon a sea of rhythmic, calligraphic waves. The water is rendered with repetitive, flowing lines that create a sense of constant motion, contrasting with the stillness of the rocky outcrops.
The use of gold leaf across the paper surface provides a reflective, luminous background that flattens the pictorial space. This technique, characteristic of the period, removes the need for traditional perspective, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the solid forms of the boats and the fluid patterns of the sea. Small, detailed touches of red maple leaves and green foliage on the rocks provide a subtle chromatic shift against the dominant gold and muted ink tones of the water.
Sōtatsu often collaborated with the calligrapher Hon'ami Kōetsu, and his work frequently draws upon classical Japanese literature and poetry. While the specific narrative source for these boats remains a subject of academic discussion, the screen functions as a meditation on the passage of time and the transience of the natural world. The balance between the empty gold spaces and the detailed motifs demonstrates the artist's mastery of composition. This print captures the texture of the original paper and the metallic sheen of the gold leaf, offering a clear view of the brushwork used to define the waves. It is a piece that reflects the refined taste of the merchant class and the aristocracy of seventeenth-century Kyoto.
