Beskrivning
A tranquil scene of a man steadying a skiff on the river Yerres, captured with the precise light and brushwork of Gustave Caillebotte.
Gustave Caillebotte painted this work during his frequent visits to the family estate in Yerres, a commune located south of Paris. The composition captures a moment of leisure, focusing on a lone figure standing on a wooden dock, reaching out with an oar to steady a small skiff. The perspective is unusual, looking down from a slightly elevated position, which flattens the water surface and emphasises the play of light across the river.
Caillebotte employed a technique that balances precise observation with the looser brushwork characteristic of the Impressionist circle. The water is rendered through short, rhythmic strokes of green, yellow, and blue, capturing the dappled sunlight filtering through overhanging trees. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on urban boulevards, Caillebotte often turned his attention to the private, domestic sphere of his family's property. This work demonstrates his interest in the geometry of modern life, seen here in the sharp diagonal of the dock and the clean lines of the boat.
While Caillebotte was a significant patron of his fellow Impressionists, his own output remained distinct for its structural clarity and photographic framing. He avoided the dissolution of form often found in the works of Monet or Pissarro, preferring a more grounded approach to his subjects. The figure, dressed in casual summer attire, is depicted with a sense of quiet concentration, embodying the relaxed atmosphere of a summer afternoon. This painting provides a clear view into the artist's personal world, where the quietude of the riverbank replaces the bustle of the city. The work remains a fine example of his ability to marry traditional composition with the modern interest in capturing fleeting atmospheric conditions.
