Gustave Caillebotte painted this work during a period of intense focus on the Yerres river, where his family owned a property. The composition places the viewer directly inside the skiff, creating an immediate sense of proximity to the two figures. The rower in the foreground, seen from behind, wears a light-coloured shirt that contrasts with the deep blue attire of the man facing him.
Caillebotte employs a distinct perspective, using the wooden oars and the boat's interior to frame the scene. The water surface displays a complex play of light, with green and yellow reflections suggesting the foliage along the riverbank. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on atmospheric dissolution, Caillebotte maintains a clear definition of form while capturing the specific light conditions of a summer day.
The painting reflects the artist's interest in leisure activities and the modern life of the French bourgeoisie. His technical approach combines precise draughtsmanship with the light-sensitive palette associated with the Impressionist circle.
