A detailed wood engraving by Adolph-François Pannemaker after Gustave Doré, depicting the biblical scene of Boas and Ruth in the harvest fields.
This wood engraving, executed by the Belgian master Adolph-François Pannemaker, reproduces a composition by Gustave Doré for his celebrated 1866 illustrated Bible. The scene depicts a moment from the Book of Ruth, specifically the encounter between Ruth and Boas in the barley fields. Pannemaker was one of the most skilled engravers of the nineteenth century, capable of translating the atmospheric washes and dramatic lighting of Doré's original drawings into the precise, linear language of the woodblock.
The composition is organised around a central interaction between the two figures, while the foreground is occupied by a kneeling woman gathering grain. The background features a caravan of camels and figures, which provides a sense of scale and historical context. Pannemaker employs a variety of hatching techniques to create depth and texture, from the fine, parallel lines defining the folds of the robes to the denser, cross-hatched areas that suggest the shadows of the field. The work demonstrates the technical rigour required to maintain tonal balance across a complex, multi-figure scene.
As a collaborative effort between a draughtsman and an engraver, this print represents the standard of nineteenth-century book illustration. The focus remains on narrative clarity and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, which were hallmarks of Doré's visual style. The print captures the quiet, industrious nature of the harvest scene, balancing the foreground activity with the expansive, hazy distance. This piece is a fine example of the high-quality reproductive printmaking that brought classical and biblical narratives to a wide audience during the Victorian era. It remains a study in the precision of the wood-engraving medium, showing how light and form are constructed through the accumulation of individual marks.
