Blue Veil (1958) is a representative example of the stain painting technique developed by Morris Louis. During this period, the artist moved away from traditional brushwork, opting instead to pour thinned acrylic resin paint directly onto unprimed canvas. This method allowed the pigment to soak into the fibres of the fabric, creating a fusion of colour and support that eliminates the physical texture of paint application.

The composition is defined by a series of translucent, overlapping washes that cascade downwards. The central area features a symmetrical arrangement of vertical forms, where layers of blue, green, and subtle violet tones merge. Because the paint was applied in a fluid state, the edges of these colour fields appear soft and diffused, lacking the hard boundaries found in geometric abstraction. The raw canvas remains visible at the periphery, providing a neutral ground that allows the central chromatic mass to emerge without the interference of traditional perspective.

Louis was associated with the Washington Color School, a group of artists who prioritised the optical effects of colour over the gestural mark-making common in earlier abstract movements. By removing the artist's hand from the surface, Louis sought to create an experience where the viewer focuses entirely on the interaction of hue and light. The work lacks a central subject or narrative, functioning instead as a study in chromatic density and the physical properties of liquid pigment. The vertical orientation of the forms suggests a sense of gravity, yet the transparency of the layers maintains a weightless quality across the surface of the canvas.
