Georgia O'Keeffe produced this watercolour in 1916, a period during which she resided in Canyon, Texas. This work belongs to a series of abstract compositions that explore the expressive potential of colour and form, independent of direct representation. The composition features two rounded, cloud-like shapes suspended in the upper portion of the frame, which descend into a series of diagonal, rhythmic bands of blue pigment.
The application of the medium demonstrates O'Keeffe's control over the watercolour technique. She allows the pigment to bleed into the paper, creating soft gradients that transition from deep, saturated indigo to pale, translucent washes. The contrast between the fluid, organic forms at the top and the structured, linear strokes at the base creates a sense of movement across the surface.
