George Luks depicts French soldiers marching through New York City in 1917, capturing the atmosphere of the First World War era with dark tones and energetic brushwork.
George Luks painted Blue Devils on Fifth Avenue in 1917, capturing a parade of French soldiers, known as the Chasseurs Alpins or Blue Devils, marching through New York City during the First World War. The work reflects the artist's association with the Ashcan School, a group of painters who focused on the gritty, everyday realities of urban life. Luks employs a dark, moody palette to render the city street, allowing the rhythmic movement of the soldiers to emerge from the shadows.
The composition is dominated by the deep blues of the soldiers' uniforms and the verticality of the surrounding architecture. Flags hang from the buildings, adding a sense of occasion to the scene. Luks uses loose, energetic brushwork to convey the atmosphere of the parade, prioritising the overall impression of the event over precise detail. The light source appears to be artificial, casting a glow on the pavement and illuminating the marchers as they pass by the spectators.
This painting provides a glimpse into the home-front experience in America during the conflict. The soldiers, who were visiting the United States to encourage war bond sales, are depicted as a unified force moving through the urban environment. Luks avoids sentimentalising the subject, choosing instead to present the scene with a direct, observational quality. The contrast between the dark, imposing buildings and the rhythmic, blue-clad figures creates a sense of momentum. The work remains a notable example of American urban realism from the early twentieth century, demonstrating the artist's ability to capture the energy of a public event within the confines of a city street.
