A 1970 screenprint by Patrick Heron, featuring bold, organic shapes in blue, violet, and orange that explore the interaction of colour and space.
Patrick Heron was a central figure in the development of British abstraction during the mid-twentieth century. This screenprint, produced in 1970, demonstrates his preoccupation with the interaction of colour and form. Heron moved away from representational subjects to focus on the way flat planes of pigment create spatial tension on a two-dimensional surface.
In this composition, the viewer encounters a series of irregular, organic shapes that appear to float against a dark, violet ground. The artist employs a high-contrast palette, where the cool, luminous blues and the warm, assertive orange create a sense of vibration. The brown and green elements provide subtle anchors, preventing the composition from becoming purely decorative. By stripping away narrative content, Heron forces the eye to engage directly with the physical properties of the ink and the relationship between the edges of the shapes and the surrounding field.
Heron's work from this period is often associated with the St Ives School, a group of artists who found inspiration in the light and coastal environment of Cornwall. However, his approach remained distinctly intellectual, informed by his earlier career as an art critic and his deep knowledge of European modernism. The screenprint medium allowed him to achieve the flat, saturated areas of colour that were necessary to his vision. The edges of the forms are clean and deliberate, reflecting a rigorous control over the printing process. This work provides an example of how Heron used simple geometric and organic motifs to explore complex optical effects, inviting the viewer to experience the painting as a series of shifting spatial relationships rather than a static image.
