A classical mythological scene by Nicolas Poussin, depicting the giant Orion guided by Cedalion as he seeks the healing light of the rising sun.
Nicolas Poussin painted Blind Orion Searching for the Rising Sun in 1658. The work depicts the Greek myth of the giant hunter Orion, who was blinded by King Oenopion. Guided by Cedalion, who sits upon his shoulders, Orion travels towards the east to have his sight restored by the rays of the rising sun. Poussin places the figures within a vast, atmospheric setting, where the scale of the giant is contrasted against the expansive, rolling terrain and distant mountains.
The composition is structured with a clear sense of order, typical of Poussin's mature style. The giant occupies the right side of the frame, his muscular form rendered with classical precision. Cedalion points the way, while the figure of Diana appears in the clouds above, observing the scene. The lighting is deliberate, with the sun beginning to break through the clouds, casting a soft glow across the valley. The palette consists of earthy greens, browns, and muted blues, which unify the figures with the natural environment.
Poussin drew upon the writings of Lucian of Samosata for the subject matter. The painting demonstrates his interest in the relationship between human figures and the natural world, treating the environment as a stage for mythological narrative. The sense of movement is subtle, conveyed through the giant's stride and the directional gaze of his guide. This work remains a primary example of the artist's ability to synthesise classical literature with rigorous compositional geometry, creating a scene that is both intellectually structured and visually coherent. The fine detail in the foliage and the distant horizon reflects the artist's meticulous approach to his craft, ensuring that every element contributes to the overall narrative clarity of the piece.
