A refined stipple engraving by Peter William Tomkins, depicting a playful scene of the game Blind Man's Bluff in a pastoral setting.
This stipple engraving by Peter William Tomkins captures a lighthearted scene of the traditional parlour game, Blind Man's Bluff. Set within a soft, pastoral environment, the composition features three figures engaged in the pursuit. A central male figure moves with agility, while a blindfolded woman reaches out to locate her companions. A second woman approaches from the right, her posture suggesting a playful interaction. The circular format, common in late eighteenth-century decorative prints, focuses the viewer on the dynamic movement of the figures.
Tomkins, a pupil of Francesco Bartolozzi, became highly skilled in the stipple engraving technique. This method involves the use of dots rather than lines to create tonal variations, resulting in a delicate, painterly quality that mimics the appearance of chalk drawings. The soft transitions between light and shadow are characteristic of the period's preference for refined, graceful depictions of social leisure. The figures are dressed in simplified, classical-inspired garments, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of the late Georgian era. The background is rendered with subtle hatching, providing a sense of depth without distracting from the primary action. This print demonstrates the technical precision required for stipple work, where the density of the dots determines the depth of the sepia tones. The work remains a representative example of the popular print culture of the time, which often favoured themes of innocence, childhood, and social recreation. By employing a monochromatic palette, Tomkins emphasises the sculptural quality of the figures and the fluid nature of their movement across the frame.
