Beskrivning
A 1943 Surrealist oil painting by Roberto Matta, featuring abstract geometric forms and atmospheric depth.
Roberto Matta, born in Santiago in 1911, occupied a unique position within the Surrealist movement. His work often explores the intersection of psychological states and cosmic space. Black Virtue, painted in 1943, demonstrates his interest in what he termed 'inmorphology', a method of visualising internal mental processes through fluid, non-Euclidean forms.
The composition is divided into three distinct sections, suggesting a triptych format. Within these panels, Matta employs a combination of sharp, geometric planes and soft, atmospheric washes of colour. The dark, brooding background provides a stage for floating, mechanical-organic shapes that appear to drift through a void. Thin, white lines cut across the canvas, creating a sense of tension and directional movement that pulls the eye across the surface.
Matta moved to New York in 1939, where his approach to automatic painting influenced the development of the New York School. In this work, the application of paint varies from opaque, solid blocks of black to translucent, smoky gradients. The inclusion of small, bright accents of yellow and red provides a contrast to the otherwise sombre palette. These elements suggest a collision of forces, typical of the artist's preoccupation with the dynamics of human consciousness and the physical universe. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a layered, multi-dimensional space that feels both expansive and claustrophobic. By rejecting representational imagery, Matta invites the viewer to engage with the painting as a direct experience of form and light, rather than a depiction of a known subject.
