A detailed seventeenth-century natural history study of a black grouse, rendered in watercolour with precise observation and muted tones.
This study of a black grouse is a characteristic example of the natural history illustrations produced by Pieter Holsteyn (I) during the Dutch Golden Age. Holsteyn, based in Haarlem, was a prolific draughtsman known for his precise depictions of fauna and flora. His work reflects the period's scientific curiosity, where artists were commissioned to document species with accuracy for collectors and naturalists.
The bird is rendered in profile against a plain, light background, a technique that directs attention to its physical features. The plumage is captured with careful attention to the dark, iridescent tones of the body, contrasted by the white feathers beneath the tail. The red wattle above the eye is depicted with a distinct, saturated pigment, providing a sharp visual break from the darker feathers. The bird stands upon a simple, grassy mound, rendered with light washes of green and ochre, which provides context without distracting from the subject.
Holsteyn's approach to this illustration is methodical. The line work is fine and controlled, allowing for the subtle layering of watercolour to suggest the texture of the feathers. The composition is balanced and clear, typical of the scientific drawings of the seventeenth century. Such works were often kept in albums or cabinets of curiosities, serving as visual records of the natural world. This print captures the observational rigour of the era, presenting the bird as both a biological specimen and an object of aesthetic interest. The artist's monogram, 'PH fe', is visible near the base, confirming his authorship of this detailed study.
