A classic 1896 Art Nouveau advertising poster by Alphonse Mucha for the French biscuit brand Lefèvre-Utile, capturing a scene of Belle Époque social life.
This lithographic poster, created by Alphonse Mucha in 1896, represents a classic example of late nineteenth-century commercial art. Commissioned by the French biscuit manufacturer Lefèvre-Utile, the work captures a scene of social leisure. A man in formal evening attire sits between two women, who are dressed in elegant gowns. The composition focuses on the consumption of the product, with the biscuits placed centrally on a small table. Mucha incorporates the brand identity through the inclusion of the iconic LU biscuit tin, which is clearly visible on the left side of the frame.
The aesthetic reflects the characteristics of the Art Nouveau movement, which Mucha helped define in Paris. The figures are rendered with soft, flowing lines, and the colour palette relies on warm, inviting tones that suggest a comfortable, high-society setting. The typography at the bottom is integrated into the design, a common feature of Mucha's posters, ensuring that the brand name remains a primary element of the visual experience. The background features subtle, decorative motifs that frame the figures without distracting from the narrative of the scene.
Unlike many of his more stylised, decorative panels, this work functions as a direct advertisement. It uses the allure of the Belle Époque to associate the product with luxury and refinement. The attention to detail in the clothing, the expressions of the figures, and the placement of the product demonstrates Mucha's ability to balance commercial requirements with his own artistic sensibilities. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of 1890s Paris, where fine art and consumer goods began to merge in the public sphere.
