Big Orange, painted in 1954, represents a period when Sam Francis resided in Paris. During these years, his work moved away from the gestural brushwork common among his American contemporaries. Instead, he developed a method of layering thin, translucent washes of colour. This approach allowed light to permeate the surface of the canvas, creating a sense of atmospheric depth.

The composition is dominated by a central, dense cluster of orange forms. These shapes resemble cellular structures or fragmented tiles, separated by thin, white lines of unpainted canvas. The edges of this central mass bleed into the surrounding space, where darker, muted tones provide a stark contrast.
