A dramatic Meiji-era woodblock triptych by Isshinsai Yoshikata depicting a hunt involving elephants, tigers, and figures in Western attire.
This woodblock print by Isshinsai Yoshikata captures a dramatic encounter between hunters and elephants. The composition is a triptych, a format frequently employed in the Meiji period to convey large-scale narratives or complex action sequences. The scene depicts figures in Western-style military attire engaging with elephants, while tigers prowl in the foreground. The inclusion of a European-style castle in the background suggests a fascination with foreign architecture and exotic themes, which became common in Japanese art during the late nineteenth century as the country opened to international influence.
The print displays the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines of the Ukiyo-e tradition. Yoshikata uses a palette of muted greens, earth tones, and primary colours to define the figures and the environment. The hunters are shown wielding long spears and rifles, their postures conveying the urgency of the hunt. The elephants, rendered with simplified anatomical features, occupy the centre of the frame, creating a sense of tension between the human figures and the animals. The tigers, depicted with striped patterns and aggressive expressions, add a layer of danger to the composition.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the woodblock printing process, with clear registration of the colour blocks and fine line work in the details of the clothing and foliage. The text block in the upper right corner provides context for the narrative, a standard feature in many Japanese prints of this era. This piece offers a view into the cultural curiosity of the Meiji period, where traditional artistic methods were applied to subjects that reflected the rapid modernisation and global engagement of Japan. It remains a curious example of how artists of the time synthesised local traditions with new, foreign subjects.
