A detailed 1797 engraving depicting the biblical liberation of Saint Peter by an angel, rendered in a precise Neoclassical style.
This engraving depicts the biblical narrative of Saint Peter being led from his prison cell by an angel. The composition follows the conventions of late eighteenth-century religious illustration, prioritising clarity of form and narrative sequence. The angel, positioned on the left, gestures towards the exit, while Peter follows with a posture of humble submission. In the background, a sleeping guard remains unaware of the miraculous event, a detail that adds a sense of quiet tension to the scene.
The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of period engravings, using fine cross-hatching to define the folds of drapery and the play of light. A distinct beam of light descends from above, illuminating the figures and creating a contrast against the darker, shadowed areas of the stone prison. This use of light serves to guide the viewer's eye across the image, from the ethereal presence of the angel to the physical reality of the cell.
Below the image, a Dutch inscription provides context for the scene, referencing the divine intervention described in the Acts of the Apostles. The inclusion of 'Pl. XXIV' and 'Bladz. 806' suggests this work was originally produced as a plate for a larger publication, such as a family Bible or a collection of religious texts. The style reflects the orderly, balanced aesthetic of the Neoclassical period, where human figures are rendered with anatomical accuracy and the overall arrangement remains structured and legible. This print offers a glimpse into the tradition of book illustration, where artists sought to translate complex theological narratives into accessible visual forms for a broad audience. The work remains a fine example of the craftsmanship involved in reproductive printmaking during the late 1700s.
