Beskrivning
A fine art print of Beth Chaf (1959) by Morris Louis, featuring the fluid, translucent vertical colour washes characteristic of his Veil series.
Beth Chaf (1959) is a representative example of the Veil series by Morris Louis. This work demonstrates the artist's technique of pouring thinned Magna paint onto unprimed canvas. By manipulating the fabric, Louis allowed the pigments to flow and soak into the weave, creating translucent layers that overlap and merge. The result is a composition where the colour appears to exist within the material itself rather than sitting on the surface.
The visual structure of the piece relies on the gravity-led movement of the paint. Vertical bands of orange, peach, and a singular, distinct stroke of green converge towards the bottom of the frame, spreading out as they reach the upper edge. This arrangement creates a sense of expansion and openness. The absence of traditional brushwork removes the presence of the artist's hand, shifting the focus entirely to the interaction of hue and the physical properties of the medium.
Louis was a central figure in the Washington Color School. His approach to painting moved away from the gestural style of earlier abstract artists, favouring instead the optical effects of pure colour. In Beth Chaf, the overlapping washes produce secondary tones where the colours intersect, adding a layer of complexity to the seemingly simple vertical orientation. The unpainted areas of the canvas act as a frame, providing a neutral space that allows the saturated pigments to maintain their clarity. This print captures the fluid quality of the original application, preserving the subtle variations in density and the soft edges that define the Veil paintings.
