Beta Delta - Morris Louis

Beta Delta is a representative example of the work produced by Morris Louis during the final years of his career. As a member of the Washington Color School, Louis developed a technique involving the application of thinned acrylic resin paint, known as Magna, onto unprimed canvas. This method allowed the pigment to soak directly into the fibres of the fabric, rather than sitting on the surface as a traditional impasto layer would.

The composition features two distinct groupings of vertical, multi-coloured stripes that converge towards the bottom of the frame, leaving a large, expansive area of raw canvas in the centre. This negative space acts as a structural element, balancing the weight of the saturated colour bands. The stripes themselves display a controlled fluidity, where the edges of the paint bleed slightly into the weave of the canvas, creating a soft, feathered effect that contrasts with the geometric precision of the overall arrangement.

Louis focused on the interaction between colour and the physical support of the canvas. By removing the brushstroke as a record of the artist's hand, he allowed the medium to dictate the final form. The result is a work that prioritises the optical experience of colour relationships over representational subject matter. The palette consists of clear, distinct hues that maintain their clarity despite the absorption into the fabric. This approach to painting shifted the focus of the medium towards the materiality of the paint and the surface, influencing subsequent developments in abstract art during the mid-twentieth century.
