A formal military portrait of Bernhard, Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, by the Dutch painter Jacob Spoel.
This portrait depicts Bernhard, Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1792-1862), a German prince who served as a general in the Dutch army. Painted by the Dutch artist Jacob Spoel, the work captures the subject in his formal military uniform, complete with the insignia and sashes denoting his rank and status. Spoel, known for his technical precision in portraiture, focuses on the textures of the military attire, from the gold epaulettes to the embroidered collar and the crisp white feathers of the bicorne hat held in the Duke's hand.
The composition is traditional for nineteenth-century military portraiture. The Duke is positioned in a three-quarter view against a neutral, atmospheric background, which directs the viewer's attention to his facial features and the details of his uniform. His expression is one of composed authority, consistent with the formal requirements of official portraiture during this period. The lighting is soft, allowing for a clear rendering of the medals and the orange and blue sash, which provides a contrast to the dark fabric of the coat.
Jacob Spoel was active in the mid-nineteenth century and produced several works documenting the military and social elite of the Netherlands. This painting is representative of his ability to balance the rigid requirements of formal portraiture with a sense of individual character. The work provides a visual record of the Duke's appearance in his later years, reflecting the sartorial standards of the Dutch military establishment at the time. The attention to detail in the medals and the hilt of the sword indicates the artist's focus on accuracy, ensuring that the subject's professional identity is clearly communicated through his regalia. This print offers a clear view of the craftsmanship involved in documenting historical figures of the nineteenth century.
