This etching by Nicolas Moillon, dated 1613, presents a characteristic example of early seventeenth-century printmaking. The composition is structured around a prominent, craggy rock formation that dominates the centre of the frame. Upon this elevation sits a small church and a cluster of modest dwellings, rendered with precise, rhythmic lines that define the textures of stone and timber.
Moillon employs a traditional Mannerist approach to spatial depth. The foreground features a winding path populated by small figures and livestock, which leads the eye towards the middle ground. To the left, the scene opens into a distant coastal view, where ships are visible upon the water, suggesting a broader geographical context. The sky is filled with voluminous, swirling clouds, a common motif in the period, which adds a sense of movement to the static scene.
The artist uses a variety of hatching techniques to create tonal contrast. Dense, cross-hatched lines define the shadowed sides of the rock and the dense foliage of the trees, while lighter, parallel strokes indicate the sunlit surfaces and the distant horizon. The framing tree on the right, with its gnarled trunk and detailed leaves, acts as a repoussoir element, pushing the viewer into the scene and establishing a clear sense of scale.
