A detailed historical print by Georg Philipp Rugendas (I) depicting a cavalry engagement during the 1704 Siege of Augsburg.
This print by Georg Philipp Rugendas (I) depicts a scene from the Siege of Augsburg during the War of the Spanish Succession. Rugendas, a specialist in military subjects, often drew from his direct observations of conflict. His work captures the chaotic energy of cavalry engagements, focusing on the physical strain of both rider and mount. The composition is divided into a foreground skirmish and a distant view of the city, providing a sense of scale to the military manoeuvres.
The technique employed here combines etching with mezzotint, allowing for dramatic contrasts between light and shadow. The figures are rendered with a focus on movement, as horses rear and swords are raised in the heat of the encounter. Rugendas avoids static poses, preferring to convey the kinetic force of the charge. The inclusion of German text at the base of the print provides a narrative frame for the visual action, a common feature in historical prints of this period intended for a public audience interested in current events.
Rugendas was based in Augsburg, and his proximity to the events of 1704 allowed him to document the conflict with a degree of specificity that was rare for the time. His ability to render the anatomy of horses in motion is particularly evident here, as the animals are depicted with tension in their musculature and expressive postures. The print serves as a record of the tactical realities of early eighteenth-century warfare, stripped of the idealised heroism found in more formal state portraiture or grand history paintings. The work remains a primary visual source for the military history of the region, documenting the equipment, attire, and tactical formations of the era.
