Before my Birth, created in 1914, represents the early experimentation with chance and geometric abstraction that defined Jean Arp's contribution to the Dada movement. During this period, Arp sought to remove the hand of the artist from the creative process, often employing torn paper and found materials to construct compositions that rejected traditional notions of painterly skill or representational accuracy.

The work features a series of overlapping, irregular shapes that suggest organic forms without explicitly depicting them. A large, dark purple silhouette dominates the centre, layered against a textured, earthy brown background. A circular black element intersects with a sharp, triangular orange form, creating a tension between curved and angular geometries. The inclusion of a fragment of printed paper, bearing the word 'Packung', introduces a mundane, industrial element into the composition. This juxtaposition of high-art abstraction with mass-produced ephemera is a hallmark of the Dadaist approach to art-making.

Arp's technique of arranging paper cut-outs allowed for a fluid, spontaneous method of composition. By relinquishing control over the final placement of these elements, he aimed to mirror the randomness of nature.
