An architectural ground floor plan for the Director's house at the Bauhaus Masters' Housing in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius in 1925-1926.
This architectural plan represents the ground floor layout of the Director's house, a component of the Masters' Housing complex in Dessau. Designed by Walter Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus school, these dwellings were constructed between 1925 and 1926 to accommodate the institution's teaching staff. The drawing reflects the functionalist principles that defined the Bauhaus approach to domestic architecture.
The plan illustrates a clear separation of zones, prioritising efficiency and the flow of movement. The living area, or Wohnzimmer, occupies a significant portion of the floor, connected to the dining space and a terrace. Service areas, including the kitchen and pantry, are positioned to facilitate domestic tasks, while the hallway acts as a central node for circulation. The geometric precision of the lines demonstrates the technical rigour applied to the project, where standardisation and industrial methods were intended to improve living conditions.
Gropius utilised a modular logic in the design of the Masters' houses, employing pre-fabricated components to achieve a balance between economy and spatial quality. The ground floor plan reveals the deliberate placement of windows and doors to maximise natural light and ventilation, features that were central to the Bauhaus philosophy of modern living. This document serves as a record of the design process, capturing the transition from conceptual planning to the realisation of one of the most recognised residential projects of the twentieth century. The stark, monochromatic presentation of the plan aligns with the aesthetic of the period, where clarity of form was valued above ornamentation. It provides a view into the structural thinking of Gropius, showing how he translated his theories on mass production and functional design into a tangible domestic environment for his colleagues.
