A dynamic early Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Hanekawa Chinchō, depicting a multi-layered historical battle scene with calligraphic line work.
This woodblock print by Hanekawa Chinchō captures a dynamic historical engagement, rendered in the distinct aesthetic of early eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking. Chinchō, a contemporary of the early Ukiyo-e masters, is known for his work in the Edo period, often focusing on theatrical subjects and historical narratives. The composition is divided into two primary registers, allowing the artist to depict multiple stages of the conflict simultaneously.
In the upper section, figures are shown in motion across a hilly terrain, with one warrior mounted on a boar, a detail that adds a mythological or fantastical element to the scene. The lower section depicts a more grounded skirmish, with archers and infantry engaged in close combat amidst trees and rocky outcrops. The line quality is precise and calligraphic, characteristic of the period's monochrome prints, which relied on the strength of the ink stroke to convey movement and tension.
The artist employs a flat perspective, typical of the era, which prioritises the arrangement of figures over spatial depth. This approach allows the viewer to observe the narrative flow of the battle from a detached, panoramic viewpoint. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, weathered tone that complements the stark black ink. This piece offers a glimpse into the stylistic conventions of early Ukiyo-e, where the focus remained on the clarity of the line and the energy of the subject matter. It is a representative example of the graphic traditions that preceded the later, more colourful developments in Japanese print culture.
