Beskrivning
A small oil study by Pierre-Auguste Renoir depicting a seated nude figure from behind. The work features warm skin tones and loose, expressive brushwork characteristic of his later style.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted this small oil study during a period of transition in his career. The work depicts a seated female figure from behind, her form defined by warm ochre and terracotta tones. She rests on a white cloth, which Renoir rendered with quick, visible brushstrokes of lead white and grey. Her dark hair falls over her shoulders, providing a sharp contrast to the pale background and the warmth of her skin.
The composition focuses on the volume and weight of the human body. Renoir moved away from the strict dissolution of form found in earlier Impressionist works, instead seeking a more solid and sculptural quality. This shift followed his travels to Italy, where the influence of Raphael and classical antiquity prompted him to re-evaluate his technique. The brushwork here remains loose and expressive, yet the anatomical structure is clear.
The background is gestural and atmospheric. Renoir used a palette of muted blues and earthy yellows to suggest an outdoor setting without defining specific details. This approach allows the figure to remain the primary subject. The texture of the canvas is visible through the paint layers, suggesting this was a preparatory sketch or a private exercise in capturing light on skin.
Renoir often returned to the theme of the bather throughout his life. This specific study demonstrates his interest in the play of natural light across the human form. The artist applied the paint in thick, impasto layers in certain areas, particularly on the highlights of the back and the folds of the drapery. These textures create a sense of physical presence that is a hallmark of his later style.
The model is positioned in a three-quarter view from the rear, a pose that emphasises the curvature of the spine and the hips. By obscuring the face, Renoir directs the viewer's attention to the formal qualities of the body and the harmony of the colours. The use of warm, sun-drenched tones suggests a Mediterranean setting, reflecting the artist's preference for the light of Southern France.
This work is representative of the Période Ingresque or Aigre period, where Renoir sought to combine the spontaneity of Impressionism with the disciplined draughtsmanship of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. While the edges of the figure are softened by the surrounding atmosphere, the underlying drawing remains firm. This balance between soft light and solid form defines much of his output during the late 1880s.

Bather from the Back - Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Artist Biography
Pierre Auguste Renoir
He met Monet, Sisley, and Bazille at Charles Gleyre's studio in the early 1860s. In 1869, he and Monet painted side by side at La Grenouillere, a bathing spot on the Seine, producing some of the earliest distinctly Impressionist work. They co-founded the first Impressionist exhibition in April 1874 with Pissarro and others. Of the group, Renoir was the one most drawn to people. His subjects are eating, dancing, talking, sitting in the sun, doing very little. The paint itself seems warm.
Luncheon of the Boating Party, painted in 1881, includes his future wife Aline Charigot as the woman on the left playing with a small dog. She was a dressmaker, twenty years his junior. They married in 1890. The model Suzanne Valadon, later a significant painter in her own right, posed for several of his works during this period.
Rheumatoid arthritis set in around 1892 and progressively crippled his hands. In 1907 he moved south to Cagnes-sur-Mer, near the Mediterranean, seeking warmer air. The commonly repeated story is that brushes were strapped to his paralysed fingers. The reality is more precise: he could still grip a brush, but an assistant had to place it in his permanently clenched hand. Bandages visible in late photographs prevented skin irritation rather than holding brushes in place. Film footage from 1915 shows the seventy-four-year-old painting at his easel while his fourteen-year-old son Claude arranged the palette and placed brushes in his hand.
He kept painting until the day he died, in December 1919, at seventy-eight.
