Beskrivning
Barking in east London preserves a medieval gateway amid leafy green grounds, where warm stone walls and a church tower form a quiet historic scene beneath pale summer clouds.
Barking Abbey was founded as a Benedictine nunnery around 666 and closed during the Dissolution in 1539. The surviving Curfew Tower, also called Fire Bell Gate, was rebuilt around 1460 and later served as the entrance to the parish churchyard, preserving part of the abbey's fabric.
In Barking, a tall stone gateway stands beside an open lawn. Its pointed arch frames a path through the grounds, with a large upper window below crenellated parapets. Another square tower with a clock rises behind the church to the left. Fresh green leaves and a pink flowering tree suggest spring, while soft sunshine scatters branching shadows across the broad paved foreground.
