A precise ink study for a book cover by Dutch architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage, showcasing his rationalist approach to typography and geometric composition.
This work is a preparatory book cover design by the Dutch architect and designer Hendrik Petrus Berlage. Created between 1919 and 1920, the drawing outlines the layout for the publication of Stijn Streuvels's 'Genoveva van Brabant'. Berlage, widely recognised for his architectural contributions such as the Amsterdam Stock Exchange, applied his principles of rationalism and geometric clarity to his graphic work.
The design exhibits a strict adherence to grid-based composition. The lettering is integrated into the structural framework of the cover, demonstrating a functional approach to typography. Berlage utilises clean, bold lines to define the rectangular zones for the title and author name, creating a balanced visual hierarchy. The spine is clearly demarcated, showing the technical precision required for bookbinding production.
Unlike the more ornamental styles prevalent in the early twentieth century, this design reflects the transition towards the minimalist aesthetic that would later define the De Stijl movement. The composition is sparse, relying on the relationship between negative space and the weight of the letterforms. The faint pencil annotations visible on the paper indicate the process of refinement, providing a view into the designer's methodology. This print offers an insight into the intersection of architecture and typography, where the same logic applied to building construction informs the arrangement of printed text. It is a study in restraint, where every element serves a specific purpose within the overall format of the book cover.
