A pioneering monochromatic work by French humorist Alphonse Allais, featuring a uniform grey field within an ornate frame.
Alphonse Allais, a French writer and humorist, produced this work as part of his 1884 album, 'Album primo-avrilesque'. The piece consists of a rectangular field of uniform grey, framed by decorative black borders. The title, 'Ronde de pochards dans le brouillard', translates to 'Band of Greyfriars in the Fog' or, more colloquially, 'Round of Drunkards in the Fog'.
This work is an early example of monochromatic art, predating the more famous experiments of Kazimir Malevich or Yves Klein by several decades. Allais utilised the concept of the monochrome as a satirical device, mocking the pretension of the contemporary art world. By presenting a blank, grey surface, he invited the viewer to project their own interpretation onto the void, while simultaneously highlighting the absurdity of abstract representation.
The visual composition is stark. The central grey rectangle occupies the majority of the space, surrounded by a traditional, ornate frame that contrasts with the emptiness of the interior. This juxtaposition between the classical framing and the absence of figurative content is the primary mechanism of the piece. It functions as a conceptual joke, where the title provides the only narrative context for an otherwise featureless image.
As a member of the Incoherents movement, Allais sought to challenge the seriousness of the Parisian art scene. His work often relied on wordplay and visual puns. This print is a significant historical curiosity, representing a moment where the boundaries of what constituted a work of art were intentionally blurred. It remains a piece of historical interest for those studying the origins of minimalism and conceptual practice in the late nineteenth century.
