This ink painting on silk by the 14th-century Japanese monk-painter Kaō depicts a stalk of bamboo, a subject of great importance in Zen Buddhist art. Kaō was a practitioner of the Rinzai school, and his work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, which favoured simplicity, spontaneity, and the use of monochrome ink to capture the essence of a subject rather than its outward appearance.
The composition is spare, focusing on the verticality of the bamboo stalk and the rhythmic arrangement of the leaves. The artist employs varying ink tones to create a sense of depth and movement. The darker, saturated ink used for the leaves contrasts with the lighter, more diluted washes applied to the stalk, suggesting the play of light and shadow. The brushwork is confident and fluid, characteristic of the Chan-influenced style that arrived in Japan from China during this era.
Bamboo is a traditional symbol of resilience and flexibility in East Asian culture, as it bends under the weight of snow or wind without breaking.
