A traditional ink-on-silk hanging scroll depicting bamboo in a winter snowfall, created by the Zen monk Dapeng Zhengkun.
This hanging scroll, attributed to the Zen monk and painter Dapeng Zhengkun (Taihō Shōkon), presents a study of bamboo stalks amidst a winter snowfall. Executed in ink on silk, the work employs the traditional East Asian technique of sumi-e, where the artist relies on the fluid application of ink to capture the essence of the subject rather than a literal representation. The bamboo, a symbol of resilience and flexibility in Zen philosophy, is depicted with varying ink tones that suggest depth and movement.
The composition is dominated by a large, central bamboo stalk that rises diagonally across the frame. The leaves are rendered with swift, calligraphic brushstrokes, demonstrating the artist's control over the medium. White flecks, likely applied to represent falling snow, contrast against the dark ink of the foliage and the muted, aged tone of the silk support. This technique creates a sense of atmosphere, grounding the viewer in a quiet, wintry environment.
Dapeng Zhengkun was a prominent figure within the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. His artistic output often reflected his spiritual practice, favouring simplicity and directness. The work avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the interaction between the organic form of the bamboo and the negative space surrounding it. The presence of seals and calligraphy on the left side of the scroll provides context regarding the artist's identity and the work's provenance. As a piece of Zen art, it invites contemplation, encouraging the viewer to observe the interplay of light, shadow, and the natural world. The mounting, typical of traditional Japanese scrolls, frames the image with a patterned textile border, maintaining the integrity of the original format.
